Architecture has inspired the human race for hundreds of years. The pursuit to create the ultimate home when it comes to both functionality and design is one which many designers strive toward. After all, most architects go into the industry hoping to create their own rendition of the dream home. Since the birth of modern design, there have been many worthy candidates bidding for that top spot in the history books. So, what are a few notable mentions and who do we think deserves that first place?
Saverio Busiri Vici, Villa Ronconci
Villa Ronconci is, in essence, a love letter to the brutalist architecture movement of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. The building uses concrete as the basis of the entire structure with interesting angular shapes jutting out from the main structure. Built in 1973 just outside the city of Rome in Italy Vici’s design features a number of extremely radical cantilevered balconies. These additions make the entire structure seem futuristic a whole 50 years after its conception. Despite brutalist architecture building a slightly negative reputation in recent years the Villa Ronconci is still incredibly popular which really is a testament to Vici’s fantastic design.
Arthur Erickson, Graham House
Graham House is arguably Erickson’s finest work and is considered by many to be one of the world’s most beautiful homes. Erickson was first inspired to become an architect after witnessing Frank Lloyd Wright’s work. Just like his inspiration Arthur Erickson designed homes that seamlessly connect nature and man-made structures. Graham House is a wooden framed building which features large panoramic views of the surrounding forest through its many floor-to-ceiling windows. As if the building could get any more awe-inspiring, the whole structure floats almost weightlessly over a tranquil pond.
Frank Lloyd Wright, Falling Water
It’s pretty much non-debatable that Frank Lloyd Wright is the most famous architect of all time. He has inspired many generations of architects through the years and practically created a new style of design completely on its own. Falling Water is Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece. The building stands tantalisingly close to a cascading waterfall and cantilevers over the river itself. Lloyd Wright like much of his previous work was attempting to marry both nature and man-made structures and with falling water, he achieved this with outstanding results.
The building is so famous that it has now been made into a designated museum of the architect’s career and the home’s history. The public can visit the home and walk around both the gardens and the rooms all while learning about the architect’s dynamic and successful life.
