Design is always breaking the boundaries of what is possible and in 2022 this did not change. One of the most prestigious accolades for a new build house is to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the most outstanding homes of the year. Of course, there would be no reason to be an architect if you do not want to test the grounds of possibility and build beautiful structures.
Design isn’t just about aesthetics though. It’s about how it makes you feel, the emotions that take hold of you when you walk into a room and whether you feel drawn to the structure. So, what are some of the most inspiring homes of 2022 and how can you implement some of their design features in your new build?
Derwent Valley Villa
This home at first glance might not strike you as a house which has broken any boundaries. In fact, from a distance, it might even be as unassuming as a 1970’s flat complex. However, as you move toward the building it becomes apparent that the house has been built with precision, love, and skill. The home is built from brick which is left exposed on the outside, but the most striking aspect is the large floor-to-ceiling windows which adorn the front and rear of the structure.
The home is so well designed it almost feels as if it’s floating over the pond and reeds surrounding the building. As you move inside the house the exposed brick theme continues with most of the walls being left this way. This decision makes the home seem unified and grounded and certainly makes for a cosy but strong feel.
Leyton House
The challenges of urban living are well documented and finding the right balance of light, space, and comfort can be almost impossible. These difficulties are of course made even more tricky when you factor in the cost of city life. Leyton House in London seems to have mastered the triple crown of urban design. The house is both brilliantly vibrant and fun while also homely and tranquil which is of course vital when it comes to urban living.
Norfolk Barn
Barn conversions have been a staple in modern design for some time now, so much so in fact that some architects are leaning away from barns altogether. Every once in a while though the world of design gets a conversion that reinvents the term and pushes this architectural ethos into a new frontier. Norfolk Barn situated in its namesake county is just that. The building’s quality is obvious from the moment you first lay eyes on it and that theme continues throughout. The rooms are flooded with light from all directions and the materials used within the building are both a nod to the building’s previous use and at the same time outstandingly beautiful.
