So you’re building your own property and are trying to decide what style to go for. Your architect can make suggestions and assist you on your journey, but the final decision is yours to make. You may want it classic and elegant, or sleek and modern. There’s a lot of different options for house styles, each with their own unique features. You can’t easily change the style of your house after it is built, so it is vital you pick a style you love.
Read on for some of the most popular house styles that you can consider for your new home.
Tudor & Mock-Tudor
Originating in the 1500s, this style has persisted to this day, commonly recognisable for its exposed beams and overhanging second stories. Other key elements include steeply pitched gabled roofs, arched doorways, red brick walls and tall narrow windows. Tudor revival style appeared as a reaction to the Victorian Gothic Revival, which was seen as very ornate. Tudor style was more simple and picturesque than the current trends of the time.
Contemporary
Contemporary interior design mixes old and new to create an individual property. Features of the style include open spaces and large windows, minimalism decorative detailing, environmentally friendly design, asymmetrical facades and contrasting materials. There is a lot of emphasis on sustainable design by using natural materials and renewable power sources that focus on energy efficiency.
Georgian
Georgian homes make for an elegant facade, inspired by Italian architect Andrea Palladio. Common features of this 1700s style include symmetrical exteriors with the front door in the centre, steps to the entrance, tall sash windows with smaller windows on third stories and above. Greek elements such as columns, pillars and porticoes are also common.
Victorian
Victorian architecture is an ornate mix of Italian, gothic and regency influences. Popular features include patterned brickwork, stone detailing, decorative porches, sash and bay windows, front doors to one side and high-pitched roofs. The more ornate features the better, focusing on maximalist design.
Art Deco
Art Deco is a quite modern style, bursting onto the scene in the 1920s when designers wanted to breathe new life into design with a brand new style. It’s characterised by open interiors and lots of natural light, using bold colours and geometric shapes. Common features include windows wrapping around the edges of buildings, curved and straight plain white walls, flat roofs and Egyptian-style motifs.
