Amazing architecture can be found in every city and every country around the world, from skyscraper buildings to innovative house designs, there are endless possibilities when it comes to creating something new. But how do they get inspired?
Each architect uses a different design process, however, they are likely to use at least one of the following areas as a thinking point for their design. Carry on reading to learn more.
The environment
Of course, the environment surrounding the design location is an important factor in the final design. While it would look out of place to build a skyscraper in the middle of a rural town, instead, the architect may take a look at the buildings around the area and take inspiration from their shapes, size, roof type or materials, to design something that will fit in but still have originality. Although one of the main benefits of using an architect is to come up with a new and innovative design, it still needs to fit in with the surrounding location – the results being the perfect combination of old and new.
Materials
When an architect takes on a project for a client, it’s likely that they’ll have even a small design vision. In some cases, this could simply be the use of a particular type of material or industry. If a client would like to incorporate the use of glass, for example, the architect will use this as inspiration for their design, coming up with something that will compliment this material and encourage natural light to shine through. Additionally, if the design is for a technology company, the industry itself may take centre stage and inspire the whole project.
History
Every city will have its own history and an associated landmark which captures this – from the Suspension Bridge in Bristol to Big Ben in London, architecture is an important part of British history. Many designers will use historical buildings to inspire modern designs – gothic steeples and stain glass windows can be used as focal points in a whole host of domestic and commercial buildings to create something amazing.
Shapes
Even something as simple as shapes can be used as a basis for architectural design. A great example is the Selfridges store based in Birmingham’s Bullring shopping centre. The curved design is made up of aluminium disc cladding, which creates a futuristic and iconic construction – winning several awards in the following year of completion.
